Windows 95/98/ME Automatic Setup Instructions

1. Begin by clicking on Start --> Settings --> Control Panel.

2. Double click on Internet Options. (note: if you do not see "Internet Options," click the link on the left that says "View All Control Panel Options").

3. Under the General Tab, you will see the address of the page that Internet Explorer will open first. Replace the contents with: http://www.hamilton.net

4. Click on the tab labeled "Connections."

5. Click on the button labeled "Setup."

6. Choose "I want to configure manually..." Click Next.

7. Choose "I connect through a phone line and a modem". Click "Next."

8. Enter the phone number you will need to dial with the modem. *See accompanying list of dial-up numbers.

9. Uncheck the option to "Dial using the area code and country code."

10. Click OK and then Next.

11. Enter your Hamilton.net username and password. Click Next.

12. For the Connection Name, we recommend something descriptive, like "Hamilton.net". Click Next

Outlook Express Setup

1. You will now be asked if you want to set up your e-mail and news services. Choose "Yes", Click Next.

2. Select the option "Create a new Internet mail account," Click Next.

3. You will now be asked for your "Display Name." This is your real name, e.g., John Doe. Enter it and click Next.

4. Enter your e-mail address (e.g., jdoe@hamilton.net), and click Next.

5. For "My incoming mail server is...," choose "POP3"; in the "Incoming Mail Server" blank, enter mail.hamilton.net; and in the "Outgoing Mail Server" blank, also enter mail.hamilton.net. Click Next.

6. Enter your account name and password in the blanks. Choose Next.

7. Uncheck "To connect to the internet immediately, select ...."

8. Click Finish.

Windows 95/98/ME Manual Setup Instructions

1. Close all the windows on the screen.

2. Double click "My Computer".

3. Double click "Dial-up Networking".

4. Double click "Make a New Connection".

5. Name it "Hamilton.net".
Choose your modem from the list below.
Click Next.

6. Type in your local access number. Make sure it's a number that's local to you.
Click Next. Click Finish.

7. Now, right click (with the right mouse button) on

"Hamilton.net". Choose "Properties" from the menu that appears.

8. Click the "Server Types" tab.
Un-check "Log on to Network". (So there is no checkmark in the box)
Un-check "NetBEUI". (So there is no checkmark in the box)
Un-check "IPX/SPX Compatible". (So there is no checkmark in the box)

You should just have "Enable Software Compression", and "TCP/IP" checked.

9. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
The first dot should be next to "Server Assigned IP Address." Then, down below, the dot should be next to "Server Assigned Name Server Addresses."

10. Be sure both options at the bottom are checked (Use IP Header Compression and Use default gateway on remote network).

11. Now click on all the OK buttons until you are back to the Dial-Up Networking Window.

12. Now, double click on "Hamilton.net". Fill in your user name (be sure it's all lowercase). Fill in your password.

13. Click "Connect", and your computer will connect to the internet.

14. Now go on to page 5 and configure Outlook Express for email.

Win 95/98/ME Outlook Express Manual Setup Instructions

1. Double click Outlook Express on your desktop (or go to Start à Programs à Outlook Express)

2. Click "Tools" from the top menu and then choose "Accounts".

3. From the "Internet Accounts" dialogue window click the "Add" button and then click "Mail" to setup a new mail account. Enter your name to the right of the blank labeled "Display Name". Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

4. Enter your e-mail address to the right of the blank labeled "E-mail address". Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

5. The type of incoming mail server is "POP3". Enter mail.hamilton.net in both the "Incoming mail server" and the "Outgoing mail server" blanks. Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

6. Enter your username to the right of the "POP account name" blank. Also, enter your password to the right of the "Password" blank. This is the same password that you use for connecting with Hamilton.net Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

7. The "Internet mail account name" will default to "mail.hamilton.net", that is ok. Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

8. If you use a phone line to dialup to the internet, then you should click the button to the left of "Connect using my phone line". Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

9. Your modem should already be listed in the drop-down list. Click the "Next" button to continue to the next screen.

10. If you already have a Hamilton.net Dial-up Networking profile setup then you should select it from the "Use an existing dial-up connection" list of connections. If you do not have a dial-up connection already setup then click on "Create a new dial-up connection" and refer to the setup guide in the section titled "Windows 95/98/ME Manual Setup Instructions".

11. Click the "Finish" button to complete the setup process.

Click the "Close"button and you are ready to start sending and receiving e-mail.

IMAC/G3/G4

Setup Instructions (works with system 8.0 thru 9)

1.Open up your Harddrive.

2. Open Assistants.

3. Open Internet Setup Assistant.

4. Choose Yes to Would you like to setup your iMac to use the Internet?

5. Choose Yes to Do you already have an Internet account?

6.Click the right arrow on the Introduction page

7.Type hamilton.net in the What would you like to name this configuration? Make sure the modem button is selected. Click the right arrow.

8.Select the correct modem and port settings on the Modem Settings page. The default should be okay. (consult your documentation). Click the right arrow.

9.Fill in the correct phone number for your local connection. Fill in your login name and password from your signup sheet. Click the right arrow.

10.Choose No on the PPP Connection Scripts. Click the right arrow.

11.Choose No on the IP Address. Click the right arrow.

12. Enter 208.6.238.2 and 208.6.238.6 Enter each DNS address on a separate line. Enter hamilton.net for the domain name. Click the right arrow

13. Enter your email address and password should be the same as your login name followed by @hamilton.net (username@hamilton.net) Click the right arrow.

14.E-mail account and host computer information should fill in automatically for you. If not, enter your account ID (your login name), and the mail server names; SMTP: mail.hamilton.net and

POP3: mail.hamilton.net Click the right arrow

15. Newsgroup Host Computer You can change this to news.hamilton.net or leave as is. Click the right arrow.

16.Choose No to "Do you use proxy servers…?" Click the right arrow.

17. Make sure your phone line is connected to your iMac. Choose Go Ahead on the Conclusion page.

18. After your modem connects. Open Browse the Internet which starts Internet Explorer.

19. Click on edit and choose Preferences. Click on Home/Search.

20. Change Home Page address: to http://www.hamilton.net and Search Page address: to http://www.hamilton.net/search.html. Then click OK and you are surfing.

Outlook Express Setup Instructions for Macintosh

Open Outlook Express:

1. Edit---> Preferences.

2. Click on New account. "Name" is something descriptive (either your e-mail address or full name would be best so you know which account it is) and choose POP.

3. Enter your full name within the "Full Name" field. Enter your email address in the "E-mail address" field. (ie jdoe@hamilton.net)

4. In the SMTP blank enter mail.hamilton.net.

5. In the Account ID field, enter your username. (ie jdoe)

6. In the POP Server field enter mail.hamilton.net. If you want your password saved, click on "Save Password" and then enter it accordingly.

7. Click "OK" and Outlook Express will be ready for you to use. To send new message and retrieve new ones, just click on the "Send and Receive" button just below the menu bar.

Internet Explorer Setup for Windows XP

1. Begin by clicking on Start -> Control Panel. (if you do not see Internet Options in the list, click the option to "Switch to Classic View" on the left side of the control panel)

2. Double click on Internet Options.

3. Under the General Tab, you will see the address of the page that Internet Explorer will open first. Replace the contents with: http://www.hamilton.net

4. Click on the tab labeled "Connections."

5. Click on the button labeled "Setup."

6. Click Next.

7. Choose "Connect to the internet so you can browse…". Click "Next."

8. Choose "Setup my connection manually." Click Next.

9. Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem." Click Next.

10. In the box asking for the ISP name, type Hamilton.net then click next.

11. In the Phone Number box, put in your local access number* (see accompanying sheet)

12. In the Username Box, type in your username (all lowercase)

13. In the Password Box, type in your password (all lowercase)

14. In the Confirm Password Box type in your password again, then click next.

15. Click the finish button, close the control panel.

Outlook Express Setup for Windows XP

Begin by clicking on Start à Email (Outlook Express)

(if you have never setup outlook express on your computer the setup wizard will automatically open. If it doesn't open automatically, go up to Tools, drag down to Accounts, choose the Mail tab, click on Addà Mail. The wizard will then start.)

1. Enter your display name (example: John Doe) -- click next

2. Enter your email address (example: jdoe@hamilton.net) -- click next

3. The incoming mail server is a POP3 server, it should already say that on your screen.

4. In the white box labeled incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: type mail.hamilton.net

5. In the white box labeled outgoing mail server: type mail.hamilton.net Click Next.

In the account name box put your email username (example: jdoe) note: this is only the first part of your email address, not the entire address.

6. In the password box put your password (you may check the box to remember password if you want; do NOT check the secure password authentication box)

7. Click Next.

8. Click Finish

To receive your email click "Send/Receive" at the top of the window.

 

 

Miscellaneous: 

Missing bar/envelope at the bottom of Netscape:

    If the gray bar at the bottom of Netscape has disappeared, press the following keys at the same time while in Netscape: Ctrl-Alt-S

Netscape always crashes or hangs on a specific page:

    Go to the Options menu and choose Network Preferences. The first tab will be cache.  Click on "Clear Memory Cache Now" and "Clear Disk Cache Now."  Hit "OK" at the bottom and try to load the page.

Netscape crashes every time mail is checked:

    Note: this will delete all mail you currently have in your inbox, if you wish to keep any mail, copy the files inbox and inbox.snm from the Netscape Mail directory and move them to a new location. 

    Quit Netscape. Delete the files inbox and inbox.snm from the Netscape Mail directory.  Restart Netscape and go back into mail. The inbox will be automatically recreated.

Images do not load:

    Under the Options menu, click Auto Load Images so that it is checked.
